Natural Numbers

Points to Remember

  • It refers to a set of whole numbers excluding zero (0). 
  • It is used for counting and ordering numbers. 
  • Natural numbers are infinite (endless).
  • The smallest natural number is 1. 
  • It is written as N=   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …

Not A Natural Number

-10, -5, -12

  • Fractions is a representation used to show the smaller parts of a whole

½, ¾, ⅓ 

  • A decimal number is a number that contains a decimal point in which shows the smaller parts of the whole number. 

1.34, 8.9, 0.1

Therefore, these numbers are not natural numbers because they are not used in basic counting.

Natural Numbers Can Be…

Cardinal Numbers show the quantity of objects or how many the objects are

Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …

Ordinal Numbers show the order of how things are set. It can be the ranking of things

Example: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, … 

Natural Numbers Application

Natural numbers can be used in addition and subtraction by counting the given objects. 

You can also use your fingers in adding and subtracting. Try to solve the equations below.
